Why is women's health not simple?

As conversations about fertility and family planning became more common among my friends, one topic surfaced again and again, egg freezing. What stood out wasn't just the decision itself. It was how overwhelming the process was. I heard stories of weeks spent comparing clinics, navigating confusing insurance policies, and trying to determine which doctors they could trust. Reliable information was scattered, reviews were difficult to verify, and finding an in network provider often meant hours of research and countless phone calls.

Seeing how much time, uncertainty, and emotional energy this process demanded, I set out to design a mobile web experience for women ages 28 to 38. The goal was to make finding egg freezing clinics more approachable by helping users discover providers based on location, compare honest patient reviews, and identify clinics that matched their in network insurance coverage, all in one streamlined experience.

The Hardest Part Wasn’t the Research. It Was Earning Their Trust.

One of the biggest challenges throughout this project was recruiting participants for user research. Because egg freezing is a deeply personal and often emotional topic, many people were hesitant to discuss their experiences or participate in interviews. Building trust became just as important as asking the right questions. I focused on creating a comfortable, judgment free environment where participants felt heard and understood, allowing conversations to move beyond surface level feedback. As trust grew, participants shared deeper insights about the emotional stress of navigating fertility decisions, the frustration of comparing clinics and insurance coverage, and the uncertainty of choosing a provider they could trust. Another challenge was balancing sensitive user needs with practical product goals, ensuring the experience felt supportive without overwhelming users with information. These conversations ultimately shaped a more empathetic and transparent discovery experience that addressed both the emotional and logistical challenges of finding an egg freezing clinic.

Designing for the Moment When “Which One?” Becomes “This One.”

User testing revealed that the biggest pain points were the difficulty of finding trustworthy fertility clinics nearby and understanding what factors influenced users' decisions when choosing a provider. Participants consistently relied on location, patient reviews, and insurance compatibility, but they struggled to quickly identify this information within the interface. Based on these insights, I refined the user experience to prioritize the information users valued most. I expanded the map to occupy most of the screen, making it easier to browse nearby clinics at a glance. Review ratings were made larger and more prominent so users could quickly compare clinics without digging through details. I also redesigned the clinic list by making each listing appear more interactive with clear visual cues, as several users did not realize the cards were clickable. These iterations created a more intuitive experience that reduced friction, improved discoverability, and helped users confidently compare clinics and move forward in their decision making process.

The Bigger Lesson

This project taught me that great product design isn't always about creating something new. Sometimes it's about taking a moment in someone's life that feels overwhelming, uncertain, and difficult to navigate and giving them a clearer path forward.

I came into the project thinking I was designing a better way to find fertility clinics. I left understanding that I was really designing for something more fundamental: trust.

And that became the most important design decision of the entire project.
